Keys School Manila Champions Responsible and Balanced Digital Teaching
In a world where excessive screen time is often seen as detrimental, Keys School Manila is taking a bold and innovative approach to integrating digital tools into the classroom. The school is leading the way in demonstrating how technology, when used responsibly and intentionally, can enhance learning and foster critical thinking.
Keys School Manila recognizes the dual nature of technology—its potential to enrich lives and its risks when misused. With this in mind, the institution has developed a structured framework for responsible digital tool use that aligns with its holistic approach to education.
“Our curriculum emphasizes equipping students with critical and efficient use of technology to support their learning and future readiness. Students are taught not only technical skills, such as navigating gadgets and the internet, but also essential soft skills, including understanding digital identity, managing their digital footprint, and practicing digital rights, responsibilities, and respectful online interactions. This comprehensive approach ensures students develop both critical thinking and responsible digital citizenship,” says Teacher Iris Velasco, Tech Ed Coordinator.
Empowering Students to Use Technology Wisely
At Keys School Manila, technology is not a distraction but a powerful learning tool. Students are taught to use digital platforms in a balanced and purposeful way, equipping them with 21st-century skills such as collaboration, creativity, and digital literacy. By incorporating tools like interactive learning apps, online research platforms, and collaborative digital workspaces, students are empowered to take charge of their learning while maintaining a mindful relationship with technology.
“In the PreK/K classrooms, we have what we call a Digital Area that the students can explore on a daily basis. These digital tools include a desktop with a search engine, YouTube (that is supervised while in use), Spotify, and apps such as Epic and BuriBooks.
“In secondary school, students develop digital literacy by analyzing media for ethical considerations and creating ethical media campaigns during student council elections. In primary school, students are introduced to platforms like Science Simulators, Google Classroom, and MIT Scratch, where they learn to navigate tools that optimize their learning and foster creativity and problem-solving. These activities are designed to build practical digital skills across all grade levels,” shares Teacher Iris.
Guided by Experts and Research
Keys School Manila’s approach is guided by careful teacher research and collaboration with Keys parents.
“Early in the school year, families are informed of the use of digital means for learning inside the classroom. They are encouraged to be involved,” says Teacher Iris.
Striking a Balance Between Online and Offline Recognizing the importance of balance, Keys School Manila promotes a healthy mix of screen-based and hands-on activities. Outdoor play, creative arts, and physical education remain integral to the school’s curriculum, ensuring that students thrive both physically and mentally.
“Technology is here to stay, and it’s up to us as educators to teach our students how to navigate it wisely,” says Stephanie Barredo, Head of School at Keys School Manila. “At Keys, we view technology not as the enemy, but as an ally in creating meaningful and engaging learning experiences.”
